How to Prepare for Your Test Shoot: A Complete Guide for Models

Updated: Jul 19

Whether you’re a new model or an established professional, preparing for a test shoot is essential to making a strong impression and expanding your portfolio. A successful test shoot can showcase your versatility and unique style while helping you gain confidence in front of the camera. Here’s a comprehensive guide on what to bring and how to prepare.

Clothing: Versatility and Simplicity are Key

Your clothing choices should provide variety while staying simple enough to highlight you as the focal point. Here’s a breakdown of what to bring:

  • Neutral Basics: Solid-colored tank tops, t-shirts, and long-sleeve shirts in black, white, and neutral tones. These provide a clean, classic look that puts the focus on your face and figure.

A classic black ensemble: simple, elegant and perfect for showcasing your beauty
  • Jeans: A well-fitted pair of classic blue or black jeans is a staple. They’re great for casual and lifestyle shots.

  • Extra Clothing: Bring a few pieces that reflect your personality and add visual interest:

    • Favorite Statement Pieces: Think of a leather jacket, a patterned blazer, or a bold-coloured top.

    • Accessories: Stylish hats, scarves, or textured fabrics can enhance the look without overwhelming the image.

Edgy elegance: a sheer fitted top with a statement choker bra creates a bold fashion look.

  • Shoes: Make sure you’re covered for different shoot styles:

    • Nude or black heels for women.

    • Neutral-coloured sneakers or casual shoes.

    • Flats or boots if requested.

    • Athletic Wear: Bring gym clothes and sneakers for any athletic-themed shots.

Tip: Make sure your shoes are clean! Dust, dirt, or scuffs might not seem like a big deal, but they can ruin the vibe of an otherwise perfect shot. A quick wipe-down beforehand can save time (and headaches) in post-production!

  • Dress/Skirt: Simple, well-fitted options in solid colours.

A minimalist, fitted dress in a neutral tone: an ideal choice for a timeless elegant look

  • Outerwear: A blazer or lightweight jacket adds a touch of sophistication and variety.

  • Undergarments & Tights: Bring nude and black seamless underwear, strapless bras, and tights (in nude or black). These are essential for versatility and creating smooth lines under different outfits.

Accessories: Less is More

Minimal accessories can elevate your look while keeping the focus on you:

  • Jewellery: Stick with simple studs, thin chains, or delicate rings.

  • Belts: Bring neutral-coloured belts (black, brown, or nude) to enhance different outfits.

  • Hair Accessories: Simple hair ties, clips, or headbands can help with quick styling changes.

Grooming & Makeup: Polished but Natural

Even if a makeup artist (MUA) is booked for the shoot, bringing your own makeup kit is essential for touch-ups or emergencies. Here’s what you should have:

  • Basic Makeup Kit: Foundation, concealer, neutral eyeshadow palette, mascara, and lip balm or nude lipstick. (Note: A professional MUA is typically booked for each shoot, but having your kit ensures you’re ready for any last-minute adjustments.)

Natural beauty with subtle makeup: flawless, fresh-faced look

  • Hair Products: Brush, comb, dry shampoo, and hair spray to manage flyaways and add volume.

  • Skin Products: Moisturizer, makeup remover, and wipes for quick cleanups.

  • Nail Care: Ensure your nails are neatly manicured, with clear or nude polish for a clean and professional look.

Tip: Stay hydrated and get enough rest before the shoot to help your skin look its best.
